Griffith, head of the Hawthorne family, has always prided himself on being in control- to the point that he's already picked out the suitable woman for himself to fall in love with. Despite this, however, he finds himself more and more interested in the woman's popular cousin, Isabella Breckenridge. It's not a sensible choice for him to make, this pursuit of her- what is going on?
Isabella has not been in London for long, but already her beauty has made her the toast of the town- not that she cares. There is only one reason for which she encourages her numerous admirers, and it is the same reason for which she has to ignore the growing feelings she has for Griffith.
Each know that circumstances are against them- how will their story end?
My Review:
I always was curious to see how Griffith's story, as head of the Hawthorne family, would turn out. Very protective and logical, he still has a fun and witty side that his family and friends get to see, and it made him an endearing character. Beautiful, kind and able to banter back and forth with Griffith, Isabella fit right in with the rest of the Hawthorne family. However, it is always the road to get to a happy ending that is interesting, and while Griffith and Isabella had their own share of adventure and trouble, I did not find it quite as intriguing as I'd found A Noble Masquerade (the first in the series).
The setting for the story was, for the most part, the heart of London, and while in some circumstances I may not mind this, I prefer whenever characters are in a mysterious country estate, or something of the like. Another reason I may not have liked this novel in comparison with book one is that the story situations were both very different, and while An Inconvenient Beauty had a unique plot, I preferred the danger and intrigue in book one.
Also,while A Noble Masquerade was the first book in the series, introducing us to all the characters, this novel was the last book in the series, and I think I would have enjoyed it much more had I had the privilege of reading the two middle books in the series. It would have been more fulfilling that way- though the book can indeed be read alone, it is always much nicer to see a family's stories in order.
That being said, this still is a good book, and I began to get more interested in it during the last half of the story. It does have its amusing moments (one part of the story in particular-a shout out to Mrs. Hunter for adding that part in. I loved it) as well as heartwarming and moments where you feel like sighing in contentment for a story ending well. All in all, still a good ending to the Hawthorne House series.
