Christian Historical Romance
Paperback & ebook, 352 Pages

Eloise Drake's prim demeanor hides the turbulent past she believes is finally behind her. A mathematical genius, she's now a successful accountant for the largest engineering project in 1908 New York. But to her dismay, her new position puts her back in the path of the man responsible for her deepest heartbreak.
Alex Duval is the mayor of a town about to be wiped off the map. The state plans to flood the entire valley where his town sits in order to build a new reservoir, and Alex is stunned to discover the woman he once loved on the team charged with the demolition. With his world crumbling around him, Alex devises a risky plan to save his town--but he needs Eloise's help to succeed.
Alex is determined to win back the woman he thought he'd lost forever, but even their combined ingenuity may not be enough to overcome the odds against them.
Other Books in the Series
My Review
In a way, the first few books in the series have been leading up to this one, so it was interesting for me to get to read the conclusion to it all. (However, feel free to still read A Desperate Hope, even if you haven't the first two. It works fine as a standalone, even if it's the last in the series).

"I would do anything in the world for you," he said. "Always. Show me a dragon to slay. A mountain to climb. Just ask."

Alex is a schemer and dreamer. He reaches for the impossible, while Eloise looks at the logical side of things. Together, they balance each other out. While the logical characters in books seem to sometimes feel dull and one-layered, Eloise is very one-of-a-kind and interesting. Alex tends to bring out the best in her, as she does to him, and together they make a fierce (and compelling) couple in their fight to keep the town together (I also enjoyed the fun little spats they shared back and forth).

"I'm an accountant," she said. "We don't do heroics."

The town itself is fun, hardy and, as most small-towns are and should be, just slightly kooky. It's pretty hard not to fall in love with it and wish it the best as it tries to stay alive. I was rooting for it all the way, and really hoped things would end well for this place.
I'm not going to spoil the ending or anything that happens before then. However, I will say that I love how Elizabeth Camden, with her fine way of weaving a plot, mixes the good and the bad together. No smooth sailing for our characters here, but they also get plenty of happy, triumphant moments as well, including a message of hope and praying for (as well as aiming for) the impossible.
Historic fiction fans, try this one out! Elizabeth Camden weaves a plot that will keep the pages turning. It's a book (and series) I loved, and well worth reading.
Conclusion: Five hearts ♥♥♥♥♥
I received this book from Bethany House Publishers through Prism Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
